For many years, I just could not bring myself to utilize a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb within a Craftsman style light fixture. I hadn't liked the color of the light emission or the bulb's large size.
Over this past year, I've realized just how far CFL technology has come and just how important it is to use them where favorable or applicable. The warm white light of many new spiral CFL bulbs are actually very nice and not characteristic of the brighter daylight fluorescents. CFL bulbs come in especially handy for outdoor installations where the light may be left on for longer periods of time. They last much longer and cost less to operate than conventional incandescent light bulbs. They also generate much less heat. A fluorescent bulb can produce between 50 and 100 lumens per watt, making fluorescent bulbs three to six times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. The expected life of an incandescent bulb is about 1,000 hours, while CFLs have an expected life of about 10,000 hours.
Wattage
Screw-in CFLs come in wattages from 5 to 40 watts. Hard-wired CFLs can go up to 55 Watts. The list below shows the CFL wattage required for roughly the same light output as standard incandescent bulbs:
* 40 watt incandescent = 15-watt CFL
* 60-watt incandescent = 20-watt CFL
* 75-watt incandescent = 27-watt CFL
* 100-watt incandescent = 40-watt CFL
A safe rule of thumb of 3:1 for incandescent to CFL wattage can be applied when determining appropriate replacement CFLs for incandescent bulbs.
The CFL bulb works very well in fixtures that have an opaque glass and have ample space within the lantern to accommodate the bulb. We use them in all of our column mount fixtures and larger pendants. CFL bulbs are not recommended for use with a rheostat dimmer or timer mechanism however.
