Japanese Lanterns Now In Bloom!

Since childhood, I've been fascinated with this plant. I remember playing in our neighbor's backyard in upstate New York, and seeing them in full bloom one early Autumn. Of course, being the inquisitive kid I was, I had to picked one and dissect it and found a plump seed inside the bright orange lantern pod.

The plant is actually a woody shrub like plant and can spread like crazy in a favorable environment.
One day, I will plant one in my own yard. According to this blog...you can keep it as a potted plant.

We love the beautiful rendition of Japanese Lanterns in the above tile by Motawi Tileworks. The colorful fruit of the Japanese Lantern is captured in this tile adaptation of Yoshiko Yamamoto's block print of the same name. It is a 6" x 6" decorative tile.

We also love this beautiful print by Dorothy Markert entitled Chinese Lanterns in a Fulper Vase.

Finished Curb Appeal Project!

Some of you may recall the home exterior transformation happening right here on my street (posted in August). Well we completed the project this past weekend! We did the lighting (Valencia Series), mailbox (Evergreen), custom doorbell (The Lyndhurst), the house number marker (The Hampton). To top it off, I worked with the owner in completing the landscaping (back-breaking work).

Hummingbirds On The Move

For the past 4 years, at exactly this time of year, we get visitors hovering around the 10 foot line of lush Trumpet Vines in my backyard. They come like clockwork in the second week of September and stay for only 2 to 3 days. Growing up in upstate New York, I had never seen them (but I understand they were around). In fact, the first time witnessing Hummingbirds was on a trip to The Botanical Gardens in Denver, CO. There, we had to duck for cover as a wide variety of Hummingbirds darted in every direction!

My understanding is that the Hummingbirds showing up in my yard every September are juvenile Ruby Throated Hummingbirds on migration. They are just passing through. In any event, they are fastinating to watch in the short time they stay. Basically...they just eat and run (drink and run actually). They have not shown up yet as of today.

I am not sure how or when the Hummingbird became a common Arts & Crafts icon. Any comments on this would be appreciated. Hummingbirds can be appreciated year-round with our beautiful Hummingbird items scattered throughout our website. A great example of Hummingbirds captured in action are our deep relief tiles by Lewellen Studio. They are available in Bronze or Ceramic!

La Canada Wildfires in California - From Our Craftsman's Home

The La Canada wildfires were only 5 miles from one of our Craftsman's home and studio last evening. The evacuation line was only 10 blocks away. We are hoping for Jim's safety and well-being during this time.
