Door Hardware Backset and Handing Information
Backset For A Tubular Lock:

In the U.S. there are two common backsets for residential tubular locks, 2-3/8" and 2-3/4". The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the 2-1/8" bore hole. You can typically select either a 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset for the locks working parts such as the latch. Dummy sets have no latch and are surface mounted so you can install a dummy set wherever you choose on a door. If ordering door hardware for an existing door with an existing bore, then you will measure from the edge of the door to the center of the bore. If you are ordering a new door that is not pre-bored, then you have an option. Pay attention to the door design's stile width when selecting a backset. You will want your door hardware's back plate to be centered as much as possible within the door stile. Take into consideration that when a door is closed, the door stop will occupy some of the finished door stile width.

Door Handing and Door Swings:

The hand of a door is always determined from the outside of the opening. The outside is typically the hall, passageway or street side of a door. For a closet door, the outside is the room side of the door. For a communicating door, the outside is the side from which the hinges are not visible when the door is closed.

Inswinging doors - If the hinges are on the left side - the door swings in to the left - then the door is left handed - LH. If the hinges are on the right side - the door swings in to the right - then the door is right handed - RH.

Outswinging doors - If the hinges are on the left side - the door swings out to the left - then the door is left hand reverse - LHR. If the hinges are on the right side - the door swings out to the right - then the door is right hand reverse - RHR.
